In a corner of Etobicoke, bike repair is leading to work experience for local teens
Cameron Richards is being modest. When, towards the end of summer, his fellow volunteers at Weston Wheels — a new youth-operated bike shop in the priority Mt. Dennis neighbourhood — absconded to get summer jobs (ones that paid), the Grade 12 student at York Memorial Collegiate Institute worked solo, dutifully coming in four or five days a week to help the modest flow of customers with warped wheels or busted gears.

Art of bicycle maintenance puts young workers on a new path
Damien Boltauzer has been a dishwasher, picked fruit in British Columbia and tried his hand at carpentry. But for the 27-year-old cycling enthusiast, working as a bicycle repair and maintenance technician for Toronto’s Bixi bike fleet is different. Boltauzer is one of several dozen unemployed youth, newcomers and others who have found hope and new careers through the Learning Enrichment Foundation’s acclaimed bicycle assembly and maintenance program.
